Deirdre's Thoughts On How To Maintain Hair Volume March 17, 2009
The best things I do to maintain my hair volume are these things:
(i) #1 I use ThinnyHairHolder in my hair everyday. I find it most helpful to use hot rollers in my hair BEFORE I use my ThinnyHairHolder. Some women prefer curling irons to curl their hair but I prefer hot rollers. Whatever your choice is: Hot rollers or curling irons (or a brush with a blow dryer)-- all of these devices BEND your hair in the direction that you want it to go, and therefore your hair cooperates when you start to style it and place the Thinny in your hair. Having your hair cooperate is very important . If your hair is uncooperative, you tend to touch your hair more , and touching your hair a lot flattens your hair.
(ii) I try not to handle my hair too much---if you have thin, fine and in my case, super straight hair, the more the natural oils in your hands will flatten your hair when you handle your hair in styling your hair. My big ADVICE Is: "Do not seek perfection--- if your hair looks rather nice after you have styled it, leave it alone!! The more you handle your hair with your hands the more your hair is exposed to and absorbs the natural oils in your hands. The natural oils in your hands flatten your hair! I must remind myself everyday to not seek perfection in styling my hair-- because the more I touch my hair the more my hair is inclined to go flat.
(iii) I try to change my shampoo every few months because I believe that the repeated use of any shampoo seems to leave a film on my hair. I seem to have better experience. in terms of hair volume, if I change my shampoo every few months. I bleach my hair myself every month and this month I tried a new shampoo by L'Oreal called Ever Pure. I mention Ever Pure shampoo because it is first shampoo I have ever used, which did not strip the color out of my naturally white hair which I bleach and then dye a blond color.
(iii continued) My natural hair color is dark brown, however at the front of my head I have a very white streak which is at least 3" wide. I have had this white streak since I was an adolescent. My hair in its natural state ( which I have not seen in a decade or more) is now a salt and pepper blend of dark brown and grey hair ; at the front of my head I still have my white streak and it is my white streak that gives me the most trouble in terms of hair coloring. I bleach my whole head a blond color and then I dye the white streak a blond color.
(iii continued more ..) The dye on the white streak usually washes out in less than 2 weeks. I have just tried Ever Pure Shampoo in the last few weeks and it does not wash the color out of my white streak . HoOORay! I am finally getting a break in this monthly hair coloring routine/ saga/drama. Ever Pure Shampoo does not strip the color from my white streak as much as ordinary shampoos and so I thank L'Oreal for inventing it.
(iv) I use ConAir Ionic Thermal rollers on my hair BEFORE I put my ThinnyHairHolder in my hair. ConAir Ionic Thermal Rollers heat up in less than 2 minutes and they make my hair shiny and silky. They are the only rollers I will use in my hair. I do not use curling irons because I bleach my hair and I believe curling irons are way too hot for fragile bleached hair. ConAir Ionic Thermal rollers leave my hair in beautiful shape.
(v) I never use hair spray. Hair spray has much alcohol in it and all it does is dry my hair out and make it break. I find using only the Thinny in my hair is a better look for me. I prefer to have my hair have a soft and natural look instead of having that "helmet head hair is laminated to your head look!".
(vi) If you use ThinnyHairHolder, I avidly recommend that you should avoid using hairspray. At the end of the day when you are ready for bed and you lift the Thinny out of your hair ----your hair is all fluffy and pretty. You do not have a laminated mess that you may have with hair spray.
(vii) When I take the Thinny out of my hair , I always place the tips of my fingers under the Thinny ( as if my finger tips were a little rake) and I raise the tips of my fingers up into the air until the Thinny is free of my hair.
(viii) Do not pull the Thinny from one side of your head to get it out. Do not pull the Thinny from one end to get it out. The best way to get the Thinny out of your hair is to use your finger tips and place them under the Thinny and lift your finger tips up into the air until your hair is free of the Thinny.
(ix) If you happen to use straight hair pins with the ThinnyHairHolder to create up dos ( I do this every day) please remember to take the straight hair pins out of your hair before you remove the Thinny. This is important to do because it makes removing the Thinny a breeze.
